DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Robbie Grossman had five RBI and drove in the game-winning run on a single in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers withstood a late-inning rally by the Kansas City Royals to win 8-7 in Detroit.
Grossman belted a bases-loaded triple. Akil Baddoo was 2-for-2 with three walks, an RBI and two runs scored in the win, as Detroit has won two-straight.
Matthew Boyd threw six innings of shutout ball, but didn’t factor in the decision. Gregory Soto got the win out of the bullpen, his third of the year.
Jorge Soler homered and drove in six for Kansas City, which was down 7-to-nothing heading into the top of the eighth. Scott Barlow was saddled with the loss in relief, the Royals ninth-straight.
Casey Mize goes to the hill tonight for Detroit against Kansas City’s Danny Duffy. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
Former Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is hanging up his spikes. Zimmermann retired yesterday after a 15-year career with Washington, Detroit and Milwaukee. He was drafted by the Nationals in 2007 and pitched for the Tigers from 2016-2020.
The Wisconsin-native appeared in two games this season with the Brewers.
