WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO AM/FM) – Monday, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released a statement ahead of President Biden’s Tuesday visit to the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan.
While there, President Biden is expected to highlight the need for robust investments in electric vehicle technology and manufacturing as part of infrastructure discussions.
The statement can be read in full below:
“President Biden knows that Michigan workers can outcompete and outwork anyone. His visit reaffirms the importance of our state’s position as a global hub in mobility. He recognizes that the future of the American auto industry is electric – and that by investing in electric vehicle manufacturing and infrastructure, we are paving the way for Michigan and auto workers to continue being the leaders in manufacturing.
“We also know that self-driving vehicles will be electric. As self-driving technologies continue to come online, it is critical that the research, development and production of these technologies is safely done right here in the United States. Self-driving technologies will not only save lives, but create new jobs and strengthen our manufacturing capacity.
This is also essential to our competitiveness: our global competitors – particularly in China – are actively developing and testing self-driving vehicle technologies, and if we fail to do the same, we risk losing our leadership as the mobility capital of the world and the economic support that comes with that.
“That’s why I’m committed to working with my colleagues in Congress and the Biden Administration to not only support and invest in electrification, but to allow innovation to proceed. I’ll keep working to ensure that federal rules can allow these technologies to continue developing safely.”
According to a report from WWMT last week, Ford officials said that they are excited to host President Biden during his visit.
The President will be able to see the new Ford F-150 Lightning electric powered truck ahead of its public reveal this week.
This will be President Biden’s second stop in Michigan since taking office, with the first being in February to visit Pfizer.
