DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Flint native Willie Mack III will tee off in the Rocket Mortgage Classic in July.
Mack, who made his PGA Tour debut earlier this year, received a sponsor’s exemption for the event at the Detroit Golf Club. In 2011, he became the first Black golfer to win the Michigan Amateur Championship.
Davis Thompson has also accepted an exemption to play in the tournament. Thompson is a senior at the University of Georgia and is currently the fourth ranked amateur in the world.
The PGA’s second Major tees off today as golfers will compete in the PGA Championship at the Kiawah Island Ocean Course in South Carolina. Defending champion Collin Morikawa will be in a group with Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau.
The world’s number one golfer, Dustin Johnson, will be playing after missing the last couple of events with a flare up in his right knee. The 2020 Masters champion will group with Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry.
