COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In an effort to support local businesses and encourage greater social activity in the downtown area, the Coldwater City Council passed a resolution on Monday night which establishes a Social District.
A state law which went into effect on July 1, 2020, allows local governmental units to designate a Social District and Commons Areas within its jurisdiction.
The social district will stretch along U.S. 12 between Jackson and Hudson Streets and between Harrison and Pearl Street.
Coldwater Economic Development Assistant Audrey Tappenden told the City Council that those businesses who qualify may sell alcoholic drinks on their licensed premises to customers who may then consume the drink within the Commons Area of the Social District.
But you can not take a drink you bought in one bar and take it to another.
There are currently about a dozen businesses that are considered to be qualified licensees. The Social District hours of operation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Temporary commons areas may be established in conjunction with events that are to take place within the district boundary.
More details can be found in Monday night’s City Council packet at www.coldwater.org.
