NORTH WEBSTER, IN (WTVB) – The National Weather Service has confirmed a brief F-1 tornado hit Fremont, Indiana as a line of severe thunderstorms moved through southern Michigan and northeast Indiana early Monday morning.
The storms caused widespread tree and power line damage.
The twister had an estimated peak wind gust of 100 miles an hour and it was on the ground for over 10 miles.
The tornado was spawned just west of I-69 near State Road 127 at 2:52 a.m.. It tracked east and hit the former Country Meadows Golf Course causing extensive tree damage and destroying a barn just west of Fremont.
The twister then turned right, tracking through Fremont snapping trees and damaging roofs of several structures. The tornado continued east/southeast across mainly open fields, snapping trees along the way.
It then damaged another barn and destroyed several outbuildings on a farm south of Clear Lake, Indiana. The tornado continued toward the Indiana-Ohio state line before dissipating in an open field at 3:04 a.m..
The storm associated with the tornado also caused major damage south of Kinderhook especially along Southern Road in Branch County as barns were damaged, trees were knocked onto houses and cars and a road sign was snapped off at the base.
Many Consumers Energy customers in southeastern Branch County were still without power on Tuesday. The utility reports over 1,700 customers in Branch County are without power following the storms as restoration efforts are taking longer than expected. Consumers estimated it will be early afternoon before everyone is back on line. Over 500 customers were still out in Hillsdale County where over 5,500 outages were initially reported.
