UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A special meeting of the Union City School Board of Education has been scheduled for Wednesday night, June 30 at 6:30 p.m. in order for the board to take formal action on a superintendent contract with Chris Katz.
The special meeting will take place in the Union City High School Media Center.
The Union City school board picked Katz as the district’s next Superintendent this past Wednesday but he was not their first choice during an emotional five-and-a-half hour meeting that did not finish until after 11:00 p.m..
The board initially voted 5-2 to offer the position to Choice Schools Chief Academic Officer Chris Ruiter who spent time as a special education teacher in the Union City Community School District between 1999 and 2002.
Over a half hour of sometimes emotional public comment in favor of Katz took place after the vote. Katz is a long time employee in the Union City school district who currently serves in I.T. as the district’s Chief Information Officer.
Board member David Mathis was one of two board members to vote for Katz the first time around. After public comment, he motioned for the board to reconsider their decision.
Two board members changed their mind and the motion to reconsider the original decision passed 4-3.
After further discussion, the board once again voted 4-3 to offer the Superintendents position to Katz. They then voted 7-0 to support the new Superintendent.
The first day on the job for the new Superintendent will be on Thursday, July 1.
