LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A proposal has been introduced that would make it illegal for people to enter the water at state-run beaches during hazardous conditions.
The Michigan DNR is behind the effort which aims to increase safety to the public as the number of people going missing and drowning in the Great Lakes continues to increase. FOX-17 reports a memo in June that was sent to the Natural Resources Commission saying despite safety measures, rescues continue to happen, even during “red flag” conditions.
Right now, the DNR can only recommend beachgoers stay out of the water when a red flag is flying. But using a 1994 Natural Resources Environmental Protection Act, this proposal authorizes the director to issue orders to implement land-use rules. It means no vote is needed for it to go into effect.
It would begin on August 12th and violators would face a civil infraction and fines of up to $500.
