LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Motorists traveling on roads across Michigan should be on the lookout for cleanup crews this coming weekend.
The second of three “Adopt-A-Highway” sessions begins this coming Saturday (July 17, 2021). For a week-long period, through July 25th, volunteers will be combing on the sides of state trunk roads picking up litter.
Now in its 32nd year, the effort to cut down on roadside trash has grown to over 60,000 bags annually, with more than 2,900 groups cleaning six thousand-plus miles of highways. These volunteers include members of civic groups, business and families, and consist of at least three persons who are at least 12 years old, wearing high-visibility, yellow-green safety vests and toting trash bags, both of which are provided by the state Department of Transportation, who takes care of hauling away the filled bags afterwards.
Those groups “adopting” these highways for a two-year-long commitment have their names posted along their stretch of roadway. Sections are available, with more information available here.
The final Adopt-A-Highway pickup session is set to begin on September 25th.
