UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Voters in the Union City Community School district will be asked on August 3 to approve millage renewals for operating and sinking funds.
The sinking fund proposal will allow the school district to continue levying the building and site sinking fund millage that expires with the 2021 tax levy. The vote is for three mills over 10 years between 2022 and 2031, Voters originally approved 3.5 mills in 2015.
Sinking fund millage can only be used for repairing and constructing school facilities. Union City school officials say a few of the items that are in need which could be addressed with these funds are the aging middle school boiler which needs to be replaced. Parking lots at the high school also need to be resurfaced. The bleachers at Alumni Field are also failing due to erosion.
Officials point out a typical home with a value of $150,000 and a state equalized value of $70,000 would pay $210 per year under this renewal which would be a decrease from $245 per year previously.
Voters will also be asked to approve the renewal of the currently authorized millage rate of just over 17.7 mills for 10 years from 2022 to 2031.
It’s the estimated the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 17.7252 mills are levied in 2022 is just under $847,000.
