LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Governor Whitmer’s veto of a $155 million spending plan to fund reading scholarships is meeting with expected Republican backlash.
The proposal would have given Grand Valley State University the money to provide $1,000 to individual students K-5 who are not proficient in reading.
GOP state lawmakers criticized Whitmer, saying that it maintains the so-called “educational status quo”, instead of funneling the money where it is needed.
Democrats supported the veto, stating that giving GVSU $155 million without any kind of state oversight was irresponsible.
The money is part of $6.5 billion in discretionary funding sent to Michigan through the most recent U.S. coronavirus rescue package.
