BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Based on evidence regarding transmission of the COVID-19 Delta variant, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidance that states face coverings should be worn indoors in areas of substantial or high COVID-19 transmission.
This week Calhoun County was categorized as having substantial transmission.
The Calhoun County Public Health Department issued a statement through the Calhoun County Joint Operations Center on Tuesday which fully supports and endorses this updated guidance and advises all individuals to wear face coverings in indoor public spaces and while indoors in schools.
This change in guidance is due to high unvaccinated rates in Calhoun and the more contagious Delta variant.
Health Department officials say the COVID-19 vaccines remain the most effective way to avoid severe illness, hospitalizations and death. However preliminary evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people who do become infected with the Delta variant can be infectious and can spread the virus to others.
These “breakthrough infections” in fully vaccinated individuals are uncommon and symptoms are typically mild, but the health department says the chance for ongoing spread makes it important that they continue to take preventative measures.
