KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Specific plans have been laid out for the weekend funeral of now Kalamazoo County Sargeant Ryan Proxmire. He has been given a posthumous promotion to the rank of Sargeant. Proxmire was killed in the line of duty during a police pursuit that included gunfire near Galesburg last weekend.
A private service will be held Sunday morning. Then at 11:00 a.m., there will be a large procession of police, fire, and emergency vehicles that will escort Sgt. Proxmire and his family to Miller Auditorium at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo for a 1:00 p.m. memorial service. The service is open to the community. Doors will open at 11:30.
Traffic congestion is expected on Stadium Drive and approaches to campus from an alternate route are recommended. Highway exit ramps on I-94 at 9th Street and US-131 at Stadium Drive will also be closed.
The community is encouraged to line the streets along the route of the funeral procession to show support and businesses and residences displaying U.S. flags should have them lowered to half-staff on Sunday. The procession will happen along Stadium Drive from 9th Street to Howard Street.
