LANSING MI (WKZO AM/FM) – In addition to a statewide teacher shortage, districts across Michigan are dealing with a situation that will have a similar impact on students…the lack of qualified bus drivers.
Several districts in West Michigan report that they do not have enough bus drivers to cover all the necessary routes, and that some are asking retired drivers to come back temporarily until more new drivers can be trained.
According to a spokesperson for an area district, it takes several weeks to train a new driver, so incentives are being offered, including up to $21/hour in some districts, and bonuses in others.
