WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan U.S. Representative Peter Meijer was among two congressmen who flew to Kabul, Afghanistan unannounced yesterday, amid ongoing chaos in the region. It came as the U.S. military pulled off its biggest day of evacuation flights.
Meijer, a Republican who represents several counties in West Michigan was joined by Representative Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat. They flew in and out on charter aircraft and were on the ground at the Kabul airport for several hours.
It led some officials to complain they could be taking seats that would have otherwise gone to other Americans or Afghans fleeing the country. But the congressmen released a joint statement saying they made sure to leave on flights with empty seats.
The two lawmakers are both military veterans, with backgrounds in the region.
