HASTINGS MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The first mosquito in 2021 carrying the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus in Michigan has been discovered in Barry County.
Health authorities report the infected insect was found in a trap, and also said that a horse with the virus was found in Livingston County.
An outbreak of the virus occurred in 2019, where 10 human cases were reported.
State health officials advise that this is the time when EEE can show up, and that making sure to use a repellant with DEET, wearing clothes that cover all exposed skin, and ensuring that any standing water is eliminated, can help protect people from the virus.
The virus cannot be transmitted from human to human.
