Robert Alexander “Alec” Hammond, 81, of Quincy, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at home surrounded by his family under the care of Hospice of Hillsdale County. He was born on January 23, 1940 in Hillsdale to Robert William and Gladys Anges (McDonald) Hammond. On December 31, 1983, Alec married Carolyn (Day) and she survives.
Alec graduated from Reading high School in 1957 and went on to serve his country in the United States Marines. He was a member of the NRA and the Quincy American Legion, post 157. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering, reading and watching old westerns, especially Gunsmoke. Alec also loved his many dogs throughout his life and to tell stories. He was a farmer at heart, each day he would wake up and farm and then go to work in the afternoon.
In addition to his wife, Carolyn, Alec is survived by four daughters, Sara (Bob) Luck of Manistee, Amy Mansfield of Battle Creek, Beth (Pat) Kelley of Centreville, Brooke (Jerry Baker) Hammond of Lake; one son, David (Wende) Hammond of Osseo; one step-daughter, Suzan (Loran) Fickle of Quincy; two step-sons, Ken Clayman of Coldwater and Mike Clayman of Quincy; two sisters, Harriet Olaynick of Quincy and Sue (Dan) Jacoby of Reading; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alec was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, James Mansfield; two brothers-in-law, Ken Jacoby and Doc. Olaynick and niece, Heidi Goforth.
Memorial services for Robert Alexander “Alec” Hammond will be Monday, September 13, 2021 at 10:00 AM at the Reading United Methodist Church with Reverend Deb Cole officiating. Private family interment will take place in Fisher Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Branch County.
