PLEASANT LAKE, IN (WTVB) – A missing and endangered man from Kent County, Michigan had to be rescued by Indiana authorities on Friday morning after he stabbed himself with a knife.
The man was found in the 4800 block of South Old U.S. 27 in Pleasant Lake, Indiana on Friday morning just after 10:00 a.m..
When Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputies and other law enforcement personnel arrived, the man began cutting and stabbing himself about the head and upper body.
The man was given several loud verbal commands to drop the knife but the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release he refused to comply.
Eventually, police were forced to deploy less-lethal munitions in order to disarm the man so he could be safely taken into custody and receive medical treatment of his injures.
The man still refused to drop his weapon even after police had used a bean bag round and a taser.
The less-lethal munitions were able to distract the man long enough to allow responding officers to physically take control of his arms and remove the knife from his hand, thus ending the self-harming actions.
The man was then transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by Steuben County EMS.
No other injuries were reported and no criminal charges are expected to be filed.
The man’s name will not be released due to medical privacy. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the Hamilton Police and the Indiana State Police.
