EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Branch County saw a drop in it’s unemployment rate during the month of August. Data released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget showed the Branch County unemployment rate was four-point-two percent after being at four-point-eight percent during the previous month.
Jobless rates in neighboring counties went down. St. Joseph County went to 4-point-9 percent, Hillsdale County dropped to 4-point-7 percent while Calhoun County was at 5-point-8 percent.
The state says not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates declined in 15 of Michigan’s 17 labor market areas in August. “Most of Michigan’s regional labor markets displayed typical seasonal trends in August,” said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. “Unemployment rates fell in most areas. Two regions with jobless rate increases in August had temporary auto-related layoffs due to the continuing
semiconductor chip shortage.”
Workforce levels fell in all 17 Michigan regions during August, with a median decline of one percent. The largest over-the-month labor force reductions occurred in both the Muskegon and Monroe metro areas. Unemployment rates ranged from two-point-four percent in Livingston County to eight-point-two percent in Genesee County.
