COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man was formally charged on Tuesday with allegedly trying to cause his pregnant girlfriend to lose her baby but the accusations were strongly denied by his attorney who called the alleged victim a liar.
24-year-old Dominick Duane Clark was arraigned in Branch County District Court on two felony counts of attempted assault on a pregnant individual as well as a misdemeanor for aggravated domestic violence.
Clark was charged by the Branch County Prosecutors Office following a Michigan State Police investigation.
According to court documents, Clark and the woman got into two arguments within a few days about aborting the pregnancy.
Documents state she did not want to have an abortion. It was also alleged the woman was struck in the face by the defendant during the first argument and was hit in the stomach during the second disagreement. The woman is said in court documents to have suffered vaginal bleeding and that she sought medical attention.
Defense attorney Aaron Bartell denied a statement in court documents that said his client did not want the alleged victim to have the baby. He went on to say she has lied in past court cases. Bartell also criticized the Michigan State Police for how they investigated the accusations made against his client.
Not guilty pleas were entered on all of the counts during Clark’s arraignment and bond was set at $250,000 with ten percent allowed.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for October 7 with a preliminary exam set for October 12.
