BENTON HARBOR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Water problems for residents in Benton Harbor took a turn for the worse yesterday. Nearly the entire city is without any water at all due to a major water main break.
Mayor Marcus Muhammad said the mainline that delivers water to 85% of homes and businesses in Benton Harbor ruptured Wednesday afternoon at around 4:00 p.m.. The city had declared a local state of emergency earlier this week due to high levels of lead in the city’s water supply.
Over 30,000 cases of bottled water are being brought to Benton Harbor weekly and there are several distribution sites around the city.
The Berrien County Health Department says the water main is expected to be repaired sometime Thursday afternoon.
