Cam Newton ran for a touchdown and threw for a score in his first game back with Carolina as the Panthers stunned the Arizona Cardinals 34-10 Sunday at Glendale, Ariz.
The Cardinals (8-2) had the best record in the league and one of the top defenses, but the Panthers scored 17 first-quarter points and were in control throughout the game.
Starting quarterback P.J. Walker did much of the work for Carolina, finishing 22-for-29 for 167 yards with an interception. Christian McCaffrey gained 95 rushing yards and 66 receiving yards for the Panthers (5-5).
It seemed unlikely Newton would play with such a short preparation window after the Panthers signed him Thursday. Instead, Newton scored the game’s first points on a 2-yard run with 11:12 left in the first quarter. His second touchdown came on a 2-yard pass to Robby Anderson later in the first quarter.
Packers 17, Seahawks 0
AJ Dillon scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on short runs as Green Bay (8-2) blanked visiting Seattle (3-6) with light snow falling at Lambeau Field. The game marked the first time Seattle has been shut out since 2011.
Dillon, who finished with 66 yards on 21 carries, scored from 3 yards out with 10:37 remaining and from 2 yards with 1:56 left.
Quarterbacks Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and Aaron Rodgers of the Packers returned after missing time, but the game ended up as a defensive battle. Rodgers completed 23 of 37 passes for 292 yards, and Wilson went 20 of 40 for 161 yards.
Eagles 30, Broncos 13
Jalen Hurts was 16-for-23 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns, DeVonta Smith had four receptions for 66 yards and two scores, and visiting Philadelphia beat Denver.
Darius Slay returned a fumble 83 yards for another touchdown to help the Eagles (4-6) continue their road success. All of Philadelphia’s wins have come away from home.
Teddy Bridgewater was 22-for-36 passing for 226 yards and Melvin Gordon III ran for a touchdown but had a costly fumble in the fourth quarter for Denver (5-5), which had its two-game winning streak stopped.
Patriots 45, Browns 7
Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for a season-best 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help New England rout visiting Cleveland for its fourth consecutive victory.
The rookie running back carried the ball 20 times in just his sixth game of the season for the Patriots (6-4), who have won five of their past six games.
Cleveland (5-5) lost starting quarterback Baker Mayfield to a right-knee injury suffered on a hit by Patriots linebacker Matt Judon late in the third quarter. Backup Case Keenum replaced Mayfield and was 8-of-12 passing for 81 yards. Mayfield finished 11-of-21 passing for a career-worst 73 yards, with one touchdown and an interception.
Titans 23, Saints 21
Ryan Tannehill threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as host Tennessee won its sixth consecutive game by defeating New Orleans.
Tannehill completed 19 of 27 for 213 yards for the Titans (8-2), who withstood a potential tying two-point conversion attempt by the Saints with 1:16 remaining.
Trevor Siemian, making his second start at quarterback since Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending knee injury, completed 19 of 34 passes for 298 yards with two touchdowns for the Saints (5-4).
Lions 16, Steelers 16 (OT)
Detroit’s D’Andre Swift rushed for 130 yards, while Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell kicked three field goals and the teams went scoreless in overtime, resulting in the NFL’s first tie of the season.
The Lions (0-8-1) remain the NFL’s only winless team this season after a missed point-after kick left their early third-quarter lead at 16-10, enabling the Steelers to tie the score with a pair of Boswell field goals.
Najee Harris rushed for 105 yards and added four catches for 28 yards for Pittsburgh (5-3-1). Mason Rudolph completed 30 of 50 passes for 242 yards filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, who was inactive due to COVID-19 protocols.
Cowboys 43, Falcons 3
Dak Prescott passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one as Dallas steamrolled Atlanta at Arlington, Texas.
Ezekiel Elliott rushed for two touchdowns and CeeDee Lamb had six receptions for 94 yards and two scoring receptions as Dallas (7-2) built a 36-3 halftime lead while winning for the seventh time in its past eight games.
Matt Ryan of the Falcons (4-5) posted a subpar 21.4 quarterback rating while facing Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, his former head coach in Atlanta. Ryan completed 9 of 21 passes for 117 yards and two interceptions before exiting when the Falcons fell behind by 40.
Washington 29, Buccaneers 19
Taylor Heinicke passed for one score and Antonio Gibson ran for two touchdowns as the Washington Football Team upset visiting Tampa Bay in a rematch of last season’s NFC wild-card game.
After Tampa Bay (6-3) pulled to 23-19 with 10:55 remaining, Heinicke led Washington (3-6) on its longest drive of the season — 80 yards in 19 plays over 10:26 — before Gibson scored from 1 yard out. Heinicke completed 26 of 32 passes for 256 yards, with no interceptions. Washington defensive end Chase Young left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury.
Buccaneers QB Tom Brady was 23-of-34 for 220 yards and two touchdowns, with two first-quarter interceptions for the first time since Week 16 of 2012.
Bills 45, Jets 17
Josh Allen threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns and running back Matt Breida scored two touchdowns as Buffalo routed New York in East Rutherford, N.J.
Stefon Diggs had eight receptions for 162 yards and one touchdown for the Bills (6-3), who returned to form following their shocking loss to Jacksonville last week.
After taking a 10-0 first-quarter lead and a commanding 17-3 advantage at halftime, Buffalo scored touchdowns on its first three possessions of the third quarter to put the game away against the Jets (2-7).
Colts 23, Jaguars 17
A sack and fumble recovery preserved a nail-biter for Indianapolis, which survived a rally to beat Jacksonville.
Jonathan Taylor rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Colts (5-5).
Jacksonville (2-7) edged to within a field goal at 20-17 with 10:34 to go on James Robinson’s 1-yard plunge and a 2-point conversion from Trevor Lawrence to tight end Dan Arnold.
Vikings 27, Chargers 20
Kirk Cousins threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns while Dalvin Cook rushed for 94 yards and the game-clinching first down in Minnesota’s win over Los Angeles in Inglewood, Calif.
Cousins completed 25 of 37 passes for Minnesota (4-5), with Justin Jefferson catching nine passes for 143 yards. Cook scored on a 1-yard run with 9:29 left in the game, giving the Vikings a 27-17 lead.
Los Angeles (5-4) drew within a possession when Dustin Hopkins converted a 24-yard field goal with 4:36 remaining, but Minnesota kept the ball for the game’s remainder. Cook powered for 4 yards on fourth-and-2 just before the two-minute warning to seal the outcome.
