WASHINGTON DC (WKZO AM/FM) – A study by the US Department of Agriculture indicates that two thirds of the samples taken from whitetail deer in Michigan over a 15 month period were positive for COVID antibodies.
The study, conducted from January of 2020 through March of this year, has raised questions as to how the animals were exposed to the virus.
Evidence indicates that transmission risk from deer to humans is extremely low, including from consuming the meat from deer.
The USDA is planning on conducting further research to include how prevalent the virus is in deer, how it would impact the deer population in the state, and whether new variants might pop up.
