Trevor Zegras’ second goal of the game came with 45.1 seconds remaining in overtime, and the host Anaheim Ducks posted their eighth straight victory and the 1,000th in franchise history, a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.
It was one of two milestones for the Ducks on the night, as Ryan Getzlaf tallied his 1,000th career point. Cam Fowler also scored for Anaheim.
In the waning seconds of overtime, Zegras went top shelf to beat Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek (28 saves) and give Anaheim its longest winning streak since an 11-game run from 2015-16.
Washington, which had won four in a row, trailed 2-1 late in the third period when Tom Wilson deflected John Carlson’s shot down and through the legs of Anaheim goaltender John Gibson (28 saves) with 2:32 left in regulation. Garrett Pilon record the Capitals’ other goal.
Panthers 6, Islanders 1
An injury to star center Aleksander Barkov — and the uncertainty of its severity — hung over host Florida as it routed New York in Sunrise, Fla.
Just under two minutes into the second period, New York’s Scott Mayfield was penalized for a knee-on-knee hit on the left leg of Barkov, Florida’s captain and leading scorer (nine goals, 17 points). Barkov did not return, and Mayfield was ejected.
The Panthers raced to a 5-0 lead by getting one goal each from Jonathan Huberdeau, Ryan Lomberg, Carter Verhaeghe, Patric Hornqvist and Aaron Ekblad. Kyle Palmieri scored for the Islanders, who finished a season-opening, 13-game road trip with a 5-6-2 record.
Sharks 4, Wild 1
Timo Meier collected one goal and one assist to lead San Jose past Minnesota in Saint Paul, Minn.
Mario Ferraro, Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl also scored for the Sharks, while captain Logan Couture and forward Rudolfs Balcers both collected two assists. James Reimer made 26 saves as the Sharks snapped a two-game losing skid.
Joel Eriksson Ek replied for the Wild, who had won five of six games. Cam Talbot stopped 17 shots.
Rangers 3, Canadiens 2
Chris Kreider scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season as host New York won its fourth straight game, defeating Montreal.
Kaapo Kakko and Julien Gauthier also scored for the Rangers. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who had to leave Saturday’s victory against Columbus in the third period after taking a knee to the head, made 31 saves.
Christian Dvorak had a goal and an assist and Josh Anderson also scored for the Canadiens, who have lost six of their past seven games. Cayden Primeau, making his first NHL appearance of the season for the injured Jake Allen, stopped 31 of 34 shots.
Hurricanes 4, Golden Knights 2
Seth Jarvis scored 71 seconds into the third period to break a tie, and Carolina went on to prevail in Las Vegas.
Tony DeAngelo and Sebastian Aho scored in the first period to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead, and Vincent Trocheck added a late goal. Carolina’s Antti Raanta finished with 21 saves in his return from an injury sustained on Nov. 6.
Brett Howden and Shea Theodore scored for Vegas, both within the first 4:12 of the second period. Robin Lehner stopped 38 shots in the defeat.
Jets 5, Oilers 2
Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves as Winnipeg defeated visiting Edmonton.
The Jets led 4-0 before Leon Draisaitl scored two power-play goals for the Oilers in a 1:16 span early in the third period. Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor extended his goal streak to four games with an empty-netter.
Adam Lowry, Nikolaj Ehlers, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets, who completed a 5-1-1 homestand. Josh Morrissey had two assists.
Maple Leafs 3, Predators 0
Jack Campbell earned his third shutout of the season, and Auston Matthews and David Kampf each had a goal and an assist as Toronto beat visiting Nashville.
Campbell made 24 saves in his seventh career shutout as the Maple Leafs extended their winning streak to four games. They have won nine of their past 10. Mitchell Marner added an empty-net goal for the Maple Leafs.
Juuse Saros stopped 31 shots for the Predators, who had a three-game winning streak end.
Flyers 2, Flames 1 (OT)
Cam Atkinson scored 45 seconds into overtime to lift host Philadelphia past Calgary.
Sean Couturier took the initial shot and Atkinson then shot the bouncing puck into a near-empty net. Kevin Hayes also scored for the Flyers, who rebounded after a 5-2 loss on the road against the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
Oliver Kylington scored the lone goal for the Flames. Calgary’s Jacob Markstrom stopped 41 shots.
Coyotes 3, Blues 2
Barrett Hayton scored his first two goals of the season as visiting Arizona topped St. Louis.
Kyle Capobianco also scored and goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 34 saves for the Coyotes, who earned their first road victory in 11 tries this season — and just their second overall victory in 16 games.
Jordan Kyrou and Torey Krug scored and Ryan O’Reilly had two assists for the Blues, who are winless in their past four games (0-3-1). Jordan Binnington stopped 20 of 23 shots.
Sabers 2, Penguins 1
Colin Miller and Kyle Okposo scored in the second period and Buffalo held on to top host Pittsburgh.
Dustin Tokarski made 45 saves as the Sabres improved to 2-2-1 in their past five games. Jake Guentzel scored for the Penguins, who have lost three straight. Pittsburgh goaltender Tristan Jarry made 17 saves.
The game was played just hours after reports said the Penguins are on the verge of being sold to the Fenway Sports Group.
Stars 5, Red Wings 2
Jason Robertson scored two third-period goals as host Dallas defeated Detroit.
Robertson, who had only one goal coming into the contest, also added an assist. Ryan Suter, Jamie Benn and Roope Hintz had the other goals for the Stars. Jake Oettinger made 28 saves.
Dylan Larkin scored his fifth goal in the last five games for the Red Wings but did not play in the third period due to an undisclosed injury. Filip Zadina also scored for the Red Wings, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves.
