John Thomas Swanson Sr., 91, of Coldwater passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at Drew’s Place of Coldwater.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Mark Case of California Community Church officiating.
Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. The family is requesting everyone to please wear a mask. For those who cannot attend in person, John’s memorial service will be webcast on his Dutcher Funeral Home webpage beginning at 10:45 a.m.
John was born October 27, 1930 to John and Margaret (Gunderson) Swanson in Brooklyn, NY.
After high school graduation, he continued his education at Michigan State University earning a Bachelor’s of Engineering Degree. He put his degree to use starting his career at Rockwell Standard in Newark, OH and then moved on to Climax Metals in Coldwater from where he retired.
December 23, 1950 he married the love of his life, Lois Petersen. Together they made many memories.
John was a man of faith attending the First Presbyterian Church of Coldwater. He and Lois have been part-time residents of Catawba Island in OH for many years, staying at their summer cottage. John was an avid MSU sport fan and proud alumnus.
He was very active in the Coldwater community serving on different Board of Directors including the Branch County Library and as a County Commissioner. He was a Life Member of the Coldwater Noon Exchange Club.
John had many interests including bowling, fishing on Lake Erie, and golfing. His true joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Mr. Swanson is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lois Swanson of Coldwater; his children John (Karen) Swanson, Jr. of Charleston, SC, Eric (Hilary) Swanson of Ann Arbor, Janine Swanson of Coldwater, and Julie (David) Burr of Bay Village, OH; his brothers Roy Swanson of Rochester, NH and William “Bill” Swanson of Rockwood, MI; his grandchildren John, Erin, Luke, Conor, Dylan, Alison, Holly, Joseph, Caleb, and Kyle; his great grandchildren Emersyn, Everett, Trent, Maisie, Cade, Corinne, and Elodie; and many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Hill.
