COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Ground was broken on Friday for a new American Moslem Society Islamic Center at 129 Perkins Street.
It’s hoped the nearly $3.5 million project which will feature a mosque and learning center will be done sometime in 2023. Private donations helped funding the project.
The original plan for the two story structure was approved by the Coldwater Planning Commission in July 2018. They approved a Special Land Use permit for the project in February of 2020, just before the first COVID-19 cases were reported in Michigan.
The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of work on the Islamic Center which will be built on two-and-a-quarter acres of land.
American Moslem Society board member and project manager Musa Ahmed of Coldwater said they have had overcome many delays.
Coldwater Mayor Tom Kramer was among the local dignitaries who were on hand for the groundbreaking.
Other city officials on hand included City Manager Keith Baker and Director of Public Safety Joe Scheid.
The groundbreaking was streamed live on the American Moslem Society’s Facebook page. The A.M.S. is a non-profit association that represents Muslims in Coldwater.
Make sure no tax dollars go to this project. As a Christian I am totally against this.
Private donations helped fund the project. How much was that and what is the funding source of the balance?
