David was born December 15, 1945 to Roland and Margaret (Hodges) Matevia in Ypsilanti, MI. He earned an Associate’s Degree from Ferris State University. Dave put his degree to good use, spending 10 years with the Branch County Parks Division before taking a Corrections Officer position at Lakeland Prison. He worked there for 24 years before retiring in 2009. Dave proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Fulton during Viet Nam. On March 14, 1986 he married Shelley Hoath at Lockwood Community Church. Together they created many memories.
Dave was a man of faith, attending the East Gilead Missionary Church. He was very involved with Boy Scout Troop #443 out of Union City, serving as a scout leader for many years. Dave enjoyed woodworking, building many birdhouses and a multi-story dollhouse complete with furniture. He was an avid fan of the Detroit sports teams, but more importantly he loved attending his grandchildren’s sports and events. He enjoyed spending time canoeing, traveling, and fixing things. Dave will be remembered for being a good guy and hardworking man who liked teaching life skills to his family and his Boy Scout’s troop.
David is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shelley Matevia of Coldwater; his children Jennifer (Chris) Stempien, Matthew “Matt” Matevia; and Jonathan (Denise) Hoath all of Coldwater; his brother Michael Matevia of Northville, MI; his grandchildren Coby (Jennifer), Daniel, Zachary (Nikki), Lucas, and Marisa Stempien, Jakob Matevia, Lilly Farrell, Megan, Rachel, and Olivia Hoath; his great grandchildren Caidin, Nicklaus, Jackson, Mason, and Carly.
