WASHINGTON DC (WKZO AM/FM) – Antiviral medicines that are designed to lessen the symptoms in COVID patients who have compromised immune systems have arrived in Michigan, but in a small amount.
The drugs, produced by Pfizer and Merck, are set up to be given to patients once they present symptoms of the virus.
The federal government released a total of 8,680 pills of the drugs to Michigan pharmacies in the metro Detroit area.
The medications are available only via prescription.
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the state’s top medical official, emphasized that while the drug has proven effective, it does not replace getting vaccinated and wearing a mask as the primary avenues to helping stop the spread of the virus.
