COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Marshall prevailed over Coldwater 59-48 in front of a packed house at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium Friday night. In the process, the Redhawks took over sole possession of first place in the Interstate 8 boys basketball standings. Entering the game, the two teams were tied for the league lead with identical 8-1 records.
Marshall jumped out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and led 32-18 at the halftime break. Coldwater had a 30-27 edge in the second half, but it was not enough for the Cardinals to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time this season.
Brandon Downs had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists to pace Coldwater, Evan Sloan had 10 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, and Donte Work added 10 points and 5 boards. The Cardinals dropped to 11-3 overall, 8-2 in the Interstate 8.
Nate Tucker led all scorers with 14 points for the Redhawks, while Nauvion Burnett and Isaac Stetler added 12 apiece as Marshall improved to 14-1 overall, 9-1 in the Interstate 8.

Marshall won the JV game 49-44. Tyson Roby led Coldwater with 18 points. The Redhawks also took the freshman contest 49-32. Kendall Austin had 13 points to lead the Cardinals.

In Big 8 boys basketball, Bronson defeated county rival Union City 57-43 on Hall of Fame Night for the Vikings. They improve to 6-9 overall, 4-6 in the Big 8, while the Chargers drop to 7-6 overall, 4-5 in the Big 8. Quincy dropped a 57-25 decision at Jonesville. The Orioles fell to 3-11 overall, 1-9 in the Big 8. Homer got past Reading 75-57. And Concord stayed atop the Big 8 standings thanks to a 68-34 win against Springport.
