LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — There’s more good news for Michigan. The state’s unemployment rate moved down in February by two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.7 percent, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.
Figures showed that the number of those employed in Michigan increased by 14,000 while those who were unemployed declined by 6,000 in February, leading to a total workforce advancement of 9,000 or 0.2% percent.
The department did report however that the unemployment rate in Michigan was nearly a percentage point higher than the nationwide rate of 3.8% percent. Nationally, the jobless rate decreased by 2.4% percentage points over the year, more than the Michigan annual rate cut of 1.6% percentage points.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement on Thursday, March 24, after the release of Michigan’s latest economic numbers indicating that the state has added jobs for 10 straight months resulting in the 4.7% unemployment rate.
Whitmer said, “Michigan is on the move. Through tough times, Michiganders continue to work hard and build on our economic momentum. For ten straight months, our economy has added jobs and our unemployment rate continues to decrease.”
According to a press release from the Governors office, Michigan added a total of 172,000 jobs from February 2021 to February of this year.
“Michigan’s future is bright, and I will continue working with anyone to get things done on the kitchen-table issues that matter most to families. Let’s stay focused on growing our economy, creating good-paying jobs, and lowering costs for families,” said Whitmer.
