KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan drivers are no doubt anticipating that $400 check in the mail generated from the state’s auto insurance reforms.
But scammers themselves will also be looking forward to a payday as they look for ways to help drivers part with that money.
Officials from the Better Business Bureau are telling drivers to get ready for fake texts, phony emails, social media posts, and phone calls claiming to need personal information from them right now to issue the auto insurance-related refunds in Michigan.
Experts say the texts and emails could look legitimate enough to be from insurance companies, but they are not.
Some of the tips from the BBB to avoid getting scammed while awaiting the check include not acting immediately, no mater how dramatic the story is.
Don’t respond to unknown calls, texts, or emails.
They say also that drivers should contact their insurance provider directly if the message, or phone number looks to be legitimate, because scammers will often hide behind well-known names and often spoof existing company names, websites and caller IDs.
