COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal baseball team stayed undefeated in the Interstate 8 at 6-0, and improved to 11-2 overall, with a doubleheader sweep against Pennfield at Lowe Field.
The opener, which the Cardinals won 4-1, saw Coldwater starting pitcher Nate Tappenden prevail in the pitching duel against Pennfield’s Tyler Wolfersberger. Tappenden gave up 1 run on 3 hits with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts in 6-2/3 innings of work, while Joe Closson came in to get the final out. Wolfersberger, for his part, had 10 strikeouts and no walks in the complete game loss. Closson and Carter Bordner each singled and doubled.
Coldwater collected 14 hits in the nightcap, a 15-0, 3-inning win for the Cardinals. Nate Tappenden had two doubles and a single, while Brock Thornton drove in five runs with a double and the game-ending grand slam in the bottom of the third:
Winning pitcher Cam Heinemann gave up 2 hits and no walks while striking out 3.
The Cardinals are scheduled to host Portage Central, last year’s Division 1 runner-up, on Friday.
