BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — There’s a phone scam that seems to making the rounds through the various law enforcement agencies in Southwest Michigan. And the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office putting out a warning of their own on this seemingly popular scam.
On Monday, May 16, The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office received information of a phone scam with a very familiar ring to it.
The scam itself involves a person calling, saying they’re with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department Warrant and Citations department. During the call, the scammer will use the names and titles of those employed with the Sheriff’s Office to convince the person receiving the call they are indeed legit.
Afterwards, the fraudulent caller will attempt to get money from the person on the other end saying that they owe for an outstanding warrant or citation and that they need to take of the matter as soon as possible.
Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office officials are reminding the public that an officer will never contact people directly by phone to solicit funds for outstanding warrants or citations.
