GAYLORD, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — American Red Cross volunteers opened a shelter Friday night, May 20, in the E-Free Church located at 1649 East M-32 in Gaylord following that afternoon’s devastating tornado.
Officials say the Red Cross will continue to coordinate with local officials and community partners to determine how we can best support the community in the days ahead.
After a disaster, the Red Cross provides those affected with emergency assistance, such as a safe place to stay, food, health and mental health services, and one-on-one support to connect people to available recovery assistance.
They offer residents these tips to stay safe after a storm:
- Stay off the roads and away from debris. Avoid downed power lines and follow directions from emergency officials.
- Follow curfews and other orders.
- Download the free Red Cross Emergency app for weather alerts, open Red Cross shelter locations and safety tips.
