Leo W. Smurr, 82, of Sherwood died Sunday, May 29, 2022 at home of natural causes.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 3, 2022 at 12:00 Noon at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation in Union City, with Pastor Daryl Dexter of the Sherwood Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 5:00-8:00 p.m., also at Lighthouse in Union City.
Leo was born July 7, 1939 in Bronson, Michigan to Harry and Dorothy (Black) Smurr. On July 18, 1959 he married the former Mona Hicks. Together, they raised a family in Sherwood. In 2021 they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Leo was employed as a supervisor with Kellogg’s in Battle Creek and was a member of the Kellogg’s 25-Year Club. He was also employed by American Fire Apparatus, where he worked his way up to sales manager.
Leo was very active in his community. He sat on the Sherwood Village Council for many years; was on the Memorial Day Committee for 30 years; and served on the Branch County 9-1-1 Board for 19 years. Leo was always helping others. He was the youngest appointed fire chief for Sherwood Township and held that position for 25 years. Additionally, he belonged to the Branch-Calhoun Fire Association for 30 years.
Leo enjoyed antique tractors and shows, plow days, NASCAR races and fishing. He looked forward to hosting the annual 4th of July cookout and fireworks at his Oliverda Lake property. Leo was lifetime member of the Sherwood Masonic Lodge 421, where he was a six-time past master. Leo was also a lifetime member of the O rder of Eastern Star Sherwood Forest Chapter 223.
He dearly loved and enjoyed his grandchildren. He and his wife attended the Sherwood Free Methodist Church.
Left to cherish Leo’s memory are his wife, Mona; sons, Gregg Smurr of Vicksburg and Jeff Smurr of Sherwood grandchildren, Josh Smurr, Megan Smurr, Gabriel Smurr and Logan Smurr; and his granddog, Jezzie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David L. Smurr (2009).
