COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Clergy from eight area churches stepped forward this week to condemn what they call are recent disparaging remarks and social media posts concerning the Arab and Muslim community in Coldwater.
Pastor Julie Yoder Elmore of the Coldwater United Methodist Church said some of the remarks were made at the May 24 Coldwater City Council meeting.
Yoder Elmore read a letter at this past Monday’s City Council meeting written by Coldwater area clergy, which said religious and ethnic diversity strengthens, not weakens, the Coldwater community.
In the public comment portion of a recent council meeting, one man asked whether the city is considering a daytime noise ordinance. He said he was concerned with the construction of the new mosque being built on Perkins Street there would a call to prayer numerous times during the day, saying “I don’t think the people of Coldwater don’t really want to hear it.”
