STURGIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After more than an hour of discussion Wednesday with representatives from Sturgis Hospital, the Sturgis City Commission voted to hold a special meeting at 6:00 p.m. next Wednesday to consider the hospital’s request of a $645,000 loan.
Hospital officials say the money would help them stay open as they work toward securing $15 million in state funds to extend its operations until January 1, when the hospital looks to transition into a Rural Emergency Hospital.
According to the Sturgis Journal, recently passed legislation will allow for smaller hospitals in Michigan to reorganize as an Rural Emergency Hospital, but that does not go into effect until the beginning of next year.
The hospital is looking for ways to keep open and out of bankruptcy until that date.
