KENT COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The right to abortion is hanging in the balance in Michigan, where a 1931 law criminalizes nearly all of them.
WWMT-TV reported on Monday, June 27, that Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker said that he will charge doctors who perform abortions under that law.
In the report, Becker said, “I do not believe it proper for me to simply ignore a law/any law, that was passed by the Michigan Legislature and signed by the Governor.”
According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, anyone providing abortion care in Michigan right now cannot be prosecuted because of an injunction on enforcing the state’s nearly 100-year-old abortion ban.
A temporary state court injunction has prevented the 1931 ban from taking effect, meaning that for now, the law cannot be enforced while the case works it’s way through the state court system.
Becker, a Republican, said on Monday that he still plans to enforce the state’s law on abortions pending the injunction ruling.
