Dorothy Jane Szymusiak, 95, of Quincy, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 1:30 PM at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Dan Hyman officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy. Visitation will be held, prior to the service, beginning at 12:30 PM at St. Charles Church. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home.
Dorothy was born March 30, 1927 in Detroit, MI to Adam and Josephine (Kustra) Otfinowski. She graduated from Mackenzie High School in Detroit. Dorothy attended Wayne State University and then joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp in 1945. She graduated from nurses training at Providence Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and became a registered nurse. After graduating, she moved to California where she worked at Los Angeles County General Hospital for a year. Returning to the Detroit area, she worked at USVA Hospital in Dearborn.
On October 21, 1950 she married Joseph Szymusiak. They moved into the home her husband built in Dearborn Heights. Dorothy became a stay at home mother, raising her three children. After 17 years she returned to nursing as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse. She worked at Ford Motor Company until her husband retired in 1977.
They moved to their summer home on Marble Lake in Quincy, MI. They enjoyed their retirement, traveling throughout the US, including Hawaii and Alaska and many foreign countries in Europe, Asia and the South Pacific. Dorothy volunteered many years at the Branch County food bank and was a faithful member of St Charles church since 1977.
She also enjoyed fishing, gardening and knitting and was an avid reader. Dorothy and Joe played cards with friends and also at the senior center. She was a member of the Providence Nurses Alumni Association.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Paul (Sue) Szymusiak of Farmington Hills, and Jim (Monica) Szymusiak of Dexter, son-in-law Alan Mutnick of Cooper City, FL. Five grandchildren, Jennifer (Rob) Tennant of Bellbrook, OH, Joseph (Heather) Szymusiak of Wheaton, IL, Mike (Rachel) Szymusiak of Indianapolis, IN, Dr. John (Dr. Betsy) Szymusiak of Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Rachel (Max) Albrecht of North Liberty, IA. Five great-grandchildren, Luke Szymusiak, Matt Szymusiak, Kate Szymusiak, Lila Albrecht, Josie Szymusiak.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, her daughter, Barbara Mutnick, her parents and sister, Josephine.
