Anna Jean (Sweet) Baumeister of Union City, age 101, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at The Laurels in Coldwater, where she had been a resident.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or reception. A public graveside service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Lakeside Cemetery on Farrand Road in Colon, with Pastor Don Mason of the Union City First Congregational UCC officiating. Anna Jean will be interred beside her husband, Chris.
Anna was born March 27, 1921, and was the daughter of Carl and Nina (Wagner) Sweet of Colon and then Kalamazoo. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1939 and attended beauty college in Kalamazoo upon graduation. After completing her training, she worked at a beauty salon in Colon, Michigan, where she had met the love of her life, Chris Andrew Baumeister, also of Colon. Anna received her engagement ring in the mail from Chris who was stationed on the East Coast during World War II, and they married in Long Branch, New Jersey on August 15, 1943, attended by both of their mothers who accompanied her on the train to New Jersey. As many young married military couples did, Anna and Chris lived in a motel for several months, and in a rented room with kitchen privileges in a private home. “It was an exciting time,” she said and the friendships they made lasted all their lives.
She and Chris moved to Union City in 1946 where he returned to employment at Schafer Mfg. Co. Inc., and they were members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Anna was a homemaker and an Avon representative for over 30 years. She was still living in her home which she shared with her youngest daughter until recent falls required a hospital stay and transfer to The Laurels.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband Chris who died in April 1972, both parents, her sister Gladys (Wayne) Gorton of Kalamazoo and Coldwater, and her son Andrew Carl Baumeister in March 2016.
She is survived by her daughter Laura Jean Baumeister, who shared the family home after the death of Chris, and by her daughter Carol (Klaus) Schmidt of Hastings, Michigan. Surviving her also is her grandson Chris Andrew (Priscilla) Baumeister II; three great grandchildren, Emma, Kaden, and Kason of Reno, NV; four nieces, a nephew, and many great nieces and nephews.
