HOMER TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The owner of Kuntry Farms near Homer says the recent discovery of human waste in a produce field was a “complete accident”.
Andy Stutzman says he and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development are working together to make sure it does not happen again.
He says the dumping of five gallon buckets of waste from a outhouse in a five-by-five section of land was a mistake. He also told WDIV-TV in Detroit that it was not used as fertilizer.
Stutzman also told WDIV there will be no more farming or selling for the rest of this year that the soil will be tested before next year’s growing season starts.
MDARD spokesperson Jennifer Holton says they put out consumer advisories like the one issued this week if product is not produced in a safe manner and if it’s not in accordance with state laws.
According to MDARD, no illnesses have been reported from the Kuntry Farms produce so far.
