ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office says they are assisting the Steuben County Health Department and the Humane Shelter of Steuben County with an investigation into allegations of animal cruelty and neglect that occurred at a York Township residence east of Angola.
Deputies were called to the 1900 block of North County Road 600 East on Tuesday morning just after 4:00 a.m. in an attempt to locate an individual reportedly having a medical issue who had called 911 from a different location seeking immediate medical treatment.
When they arrived at the residence, a large number of animals were found inside in what appeared to be unsuitable conditions.
The Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County says over 80 dogs were found on site.
They said on their Facebook page the shelter was in desperate need of donations and fosters.
Shelter officials added the animals are terrified and confused. Most of them were crammed into tiny filthy living conditions and forced to breed.
It was also learned the 911 caller had been picked up by a friend and was taken to an unnamed hospital in Michigan.
Because of the animal’s unsuitable condition, the Sheriff’s Office contacted the Health Department and the Humane Shelter to assist in the investigation of the housing conditions and the conditions of the large number of animals that include domesticated pets and farm animals.
Assistance was also provided by local veterinary volunteers. The Sheriff’s Department says criminal charges may be sought through the Steuben County Prosecutor’s Office.
The homeowner is cooperating with the investigation and voluntarily surrendered the animals involved.

The shelter is in the process of spaying and neutering all of the animals and providing medical care which they say will take a significant financial toll on the shelter.
Besides monetary donations, the shelter is asking for donations of supplies such as bleach, laundry detergent and dog treats.
