KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Travelers across West Michigan catching flights out of Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International and Gerald R. Ford International airports on Wednesday morning, January 11 got a wrench thrown in their plans.
The Federal Aviation Administration ordered a nationwide pause on all domestic departures following an overnight computer outage that impacted flights all around the country. The pause was ordered until 9 a.m. Eastern Time to allow the FAA to validate the integrity flight and safety information.
Although the safety system affected by the outage was fully restored at 8:54 a.m., some flights were still delayed well past 9 a.m. such as a delayed 7 a.m. flight to Chicago from Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International, and about 12 flights out of Gerald R. Ford International in Grand Rapids were still delayed as of 9:40 a.m.
The White House confirming also on Wednesday that there was no evidence that a cyber attack triggered the outage, which upended travel plans for millions of passengers.
Airports in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta saw 30 to 40 percent of their flights delayed.
