LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained constant over the month of December at 4.3 percent, according to data released on Thursday, January 19 by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.
The department also said while employment in the state edged down by 1,000, unemployment figures remained unchanged over the month, resulting in a minor workforce reduction of 1,000 during December.
Overall numbers indicate the U.S. jobless rate receded by one-tenth of a percentage point between November and December to 3.5 percent, with Michigan’s December unemployment rate registering at eight-tenths of a percentage point above the national rate.
Over the year however, the U.S. unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage points, while Michigan’s rate was reduced by 0.8 percentage points since December of 2021.
Some average trends and highlights according the department: Michigan’s annual jobless rate was reduced for the second consecutive year in 2022, registering 5.7 percentage points below the 2020 pandemic annual rate of a flat 10.0 percent.
Annual average employment in the state rose by 145,000, or 3.2 percent, over the year, while the state’s average number of unemployed fell by 72,000, or 25.7 percent, with Michigan’s annual average workforce total in 2022 increasing by 1.5 percent over the year.
