COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal basketball teams opened the second round of Interstate 8 play Friday night with a pair of wins against the Hastings Saxons at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
The Cardinal boys broke open a close game late with a 16-8 fourth quarter as they beat the Saxons 42-37 and avenged a December loss at Hastings. Elijah Sloan had five 3-pointers and a game-high 16 points, while Ayden Dirschell added 14 points and 9 rebounds. Niko Downs had 6 points and 6 assists as Coldwater improved to 7-5 overall, 6-2 in the Interstate 8. They remain atop the league standings along with Marshall and Jackson Northwest ahead of a big showdown with the Redhawks next Friday.

The Lady Cards jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter and held on for a 39-23 victory over the Saxons. Freshmen led the way, as Rylie VanAken scored a team-high 10 points with 3 rebounds and 4 assists, Coley Burkhardt added 9 points, and Mya Porter scored 4 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and added 6 steals and 2 assists. Elli Foley had 8 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists as Coldwater improved to 13-1 overall, 7-1 in the Interstate 8.
