LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Monday, February 13 mass shooting near Michigan State University’s campus has prompted the Michigan Senate to introduce 11 bills related to basic gun access and safety on Thursday, February 16.
According to the Michigan Legislator, Senate Bills 76 through 86 aim to require secure storage of firearms and ammunition, universal background checks, and red flag laws, which would allow a court to determine if a weapon should be taken from someone potentially at risk of injuring themselves or others.
The bills also lists penalties both sellers and gun owners could face if convicted and also proposes an exemption of sales tax on purchases of firearm safety devices.
Democrats now asking for Republicans to join them in co-sponsoring the bills which have previously been supported by the Republicans in the past.
“I welcome bipartisan support. I don’t have any idea on the political affiliations of all the families who are grappling with the aftermath of the most recent shooting, or the shooting in Oxford. And frankly, the politics of the individuals don’t matter to me,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “What matters to me is that we do what we can to keep people safe.”
