QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Quincy Township’s wish to terminate the police coverage contract with the Village of Quincy is on the agenda for Tuesday night’s Quincy Village Council meeting.
Village Manager Brittany Butler says in a memo to the Council that she received a certified letter from Quincy Township Supervisor Gene Brand on February 13, 2023, stating they are terminating the police coverage contract and this was their 30-day notice.
Butler says with the letter being dated February 8, 2023, police coverage for Quincy Township will cease effective March 8, 2023.
That means after March 8, the Quincy Police Department will no longer respond to Quincy Township calls for such items as property checks and traffic control.
Butler says the letter does not give a reason as to why the Township has decided to cancel coverage.
According to Butler, rates for the township for coverage have been the same since 2015 at $24,000 per year with no increase in cost for the contract.
She decided last year to review the call volume going to the township and wanted to increase the rate due to the fact that Quincy officers spend about half of the time responding to township calls.
But since Quincy has only had two officers since the summer, Butler decided to hold off on increasing the cost until two new hires get certified on Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.
Brand said in his letter they were unclear on notification since the contract expired on March 30, 2017 and was never renewed to their knowledge.
Quincy Police Chief Mike Kolassa informed the Council last month that the two candidates that were attending the academy both quit after the first and second day. He said they will have to look for other candidates to attend the academy in May.
