COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School gymnastics team hosted the Angola Hornets on Tuesday night for the annual “Battle of the Border” with the Indiana ranked Hornets defeating the Cardinals 138.2 to 123.675.
Coldwater started out on the vault, where they posted a total score of 32.975 points. Angola dominated the event, sweeping the top four places. Charlotte Calhoun led the Cardinals with her mark of 8.5 to finish in 5th place. Randi Dudek was right behind in sixth place with her score of 8.475.
The Cardinals collected a total of 26.8 points on the uneven bars for their second rotation. Angola picked up first and third while Coldwater claimed the second and fourth places. Calhoun was second with her mark of 8.85. Dudek was fourth with 8.375 points.
The balance beam proved to be challenging for Coldwater. The team managed to pick up 30.05 points. Calhoun was the only Cardinal who managed to stay on the beam for her routine. She was rewarded with a first place finish with her score of 8.8 points.
Coldwater’s biggest scoring event was the final rotation of the evening, the floor exercise. The Cardinal gymnasts tallied an impressive 33.85 points in front of the home crowd. Dudek posted a personal best mark of 8.9 as she finished fourth.
In the all-around competition, Calhoun earned second place with her tally of 35.00. Dudek finished with a personal best all around of 33.55 points. Danish senior Klara-Sophie Bollmann also earned a personal best for her score of 26.4 points.
“Angola is a very talented team so it was a tough matchup this evening,” noted Coldwater Coach Kim Nichols. “Coach Janet Kahler and I were just pleased to have a full line up again for out first two events. It made a huge difference in our final team score.”
Coldwater will finish the regular season on Thursday evening when they host the Tecumseh Indians in the auxiliary gym. The meet starts at 6:00 p.m. The Cardinals will have one more week before they travel to Kenowa Hills for the MHSAA Regional meet on March 4.
