MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo woman is dead following a crash on Saturday, February 25 in Calhoun County.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Marshall post say it happened around 7 a.m. on westbound I-94 near mile marker 116 in Marengo Township.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a passenger vehicle, a 37-year-old Portage man, was traveling west on I-94 before losing control, running of the roadway and colliding into a tree.
His passenger, whom police identified as 30-year-old Evangelina Alvarez, died while being transported to Henry Ford Hospital.
The driver, suffering only minor injuries, was arrested after showing signs of intoxication. He was arrested and lodged at the Calhoun County jail on Operating While Intoxicated causing death, tampering with evidence, and obstruction of justice charges.
The driver’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.
Further investigation showed that the driver was wearing his seatbelt, while the deceased passenger was not wearing hers. The case remains open at this time.
