David Alan Smith, 70, of Coldwater, passed away March 16, 2023 following a brief battle with cancer.
A celebration of life is planned for David Wednesday March 22, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. downstairs at John Fulmer State Farm Insurance, 55 West Chicago Street in Coldwater.
Formerly from Union City, Dave was the youngest of six children born to Margaret and Richard Smith. He enjoyed a typical, rural mid-west upbringing where he learned the value of hard work and getting into mischief; traits that he would carry for the rest of his life.
Dave remained in the local area and started his family with his first wife by having his first born daughter and son; before meeting the love of his life, Deb, in 1977 at his brother Terry’s wedding. They married shortly after and settled in Coldwater. Soon they added three beautiful daughters to their already small family. Dave was devoted to Deb and his children, as he relentlessly worked to provide a wonderful upbringing of camping trips, family vacations, and memorable outings.
Dave’s heart and devotion continued to grow with the arrival of his grandchildren. He, not only lived for his grandchildren, but lived through them. They allowed him to be a kid again and “Papa” was more likely to help them get into mischief as opposed to talking them out of it. There was no end to Dave’s love for his grandchildren.
If one word could be used to describe Dave’s life, it is love. To strangers, he had a hard as nails exterior and gruff demeanor, which only ran skin deep. Beneath it all, he was a gentle and caring man who would give you the shirt off his back. If a person made their way into Dave’s heart, he would make sure they had a roof over their head and a full belly. Those close to him will remember Dave’s love for classic cars, classic rock, the ocean, and above all the love for his family and friends.
David is survived by his loving wife Deb, and kids; daughters Pamela, Danielle (Vinnie), Jessica (Jaime), and Destiny; and his son Toby (Stephanie). Additionally, he is survived by 12 adoring grandchildren, Corey, Calvin, Cheyenne, Cody, Bailyn, Alyssa, Rocco, Elise, Isaac, Xavier, Sydney, and Madison.
In lieu of flowers, come share your memories and stories with the family.
