BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council is scheduled to discuss Monday night whether or not they would be in favor of drafting an ordinance for urban chickens.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says in his report for Monday’s Council meeting that the Bronson Planning Commission approved sending an ordinance to City Council based off the Portage City Ordinance with the condition that a third party could be found to administer the ordinance on behalf of the city.
He says the city reached out to a number of companies including the City’s rental inspection vendor, SAFEBuilt but SAFEBuilt indicated they would not be willing to take this on without contracting to do all of the City’s code enforcement duties.
According to Mersman, this would be a substantial cost to the city annually.
If the City Council wants to proceed with an ordinance, Mersman thinks this would be more appropriate in the animal ordinance rather than having it in the zoning code.
Whether or not residents in the City of Bronson should be allowed to have chickens was discussed during the January City Council meeting.
After the matter was brought up in December by Bronson resident Tom Ludwick, Mersman presented Council members with a list of pros and cons.
After several options were discussed, City Attorney Chuck Lillis advised the Council at that time the chicken issue needs to be taken up by the city’s Planning Commission.
